Fostering Opportunities Scholarships

Description of Services:

Each year as many as 400 youth “age out” of the foster care system in San Diego County at the age of 18. While many qualify for financial aid for education, this still leaves books, food, rent and transportation. This is where FOS comes in. Since 2002, over $700,000 has been raised for scholarships. We have had 46 students graduate with higher education degrees and a total of 63 graduations. We are very proud to announce that 3 of our students have earned Master’s degrees and 1 has passed the bar examination! 

Eligibility:

  • You must attend an accredited public college or university in San Diego County.
  • You must be enrolled for at least 9 credit hours per semester.
  • You must have a 2.0 GPA or above each semester.

Application Deadlines:

  • Fall – postmarked no later than June 30th.
  • Spring – postmarked no later than October 10th.

All students must submit the following documents:

  • Application – Download, fill in on your computer, print, sign, scan and e-mail to d.applebee@yahoo.com. Handwritten applications, except for signature, will not be accepted.
  • An OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT for your last semester as soon as it is available.
  • Proof of enrollment in a San Diego County college/university with at least 9 credit hours per semester.

First time applicants:

In addition to the documents above, new applicants must also submit:

  • Proof of having been in the San Diego County Foster Care Program (letter from CPS).
  • Letter of recommendation from supportive adult.
