The My First Home Program fills the gap by providing the essentials for a first home/apartment setup: a bed, furniture, kitchen utensils, linens, cleaning materials, small appliances, lighting, and accessories. Having a bed to sleep on and an attractive apartment setup is a huge boost to the self-esteem of these youth, who have gone through life with hand-me-downs or with nothing at all from their families.

The program at USD is 10-12, followed by then lunch, picking up laptops, and shopping for Dorm Furnishings!

ESSENTIAL RESOURCES – A laptop, printer, books, supplies & tech support to enable students to compete on a level playing field

A PLACE TO CALL HOME – The opportunity to partner with volunteer shoppers to create a home of their own (dorm or apartment) for the very first time

CONSISTENT CONNECTIONS – The first step in cultivating relationships with caring adults who believe in them and are committed to their success

Details

Are you experiencing an emergency? Do you need immediate financial support? Emergency/Basic Needs provides critical financial support in emergency situations, including rent, bus passes, gas cards, grocery gift cards, clothing, and vehicle repair.

Description of Services:
Are you experiencing an emergency? Do you need immediate financial support? Emergency/Basic Needs provides critical financial support in emergency situations, including rent, bus passes, gas cards, grocery gift cards, clothing, and vehicle repair. Provides youth in transition with immediate financial assistance for items such as rent, bus passes, gas cards, interview clothing, vehicle repair, food cards, and other urgent needs. Program staff personally meet applicants, identify and assess needs, and assist with purchasing the essentials to resolve the immediate financial emergency. Staff and volunteers also provide one-on-one advice to participants by sitting down and outlining a budget and financial plan. Youth are given an overview of all JIT programs and may apply for other services.

Requirements:
Youth must be going to school and/or working and between the ages of 18 and 26.

Bridges To Success for young men is a unique opportunity for any youth who may have given up on ever being heard or finding the positive male energy and experience that could turn his deepest aspirations into empowerment. By coming together to share stories, learn from their common mistakes, gain the skills to excel in life, and form trusting relationships as a foundation for a proud future, this “band of brothers” inspires hope and success.

Requirements:
Youth must be going to school and/or working and between the ages of 18 and 26. The program is designed to help our youth bring their employment options into focus. Through presentations, discussion, job shadowing, and one-on-one connections with powerful male role models, they are given the tools and support to recognize their strengths and include entrepreneurship and non-traditional higher paying fields in their futures. They are also given the opportunity to begin make lasting connections that can build the networks and career links so essential to career success.

Lack of reliable transportation is a major obstacle that limits employment opportunities, and is detrimental to establishing a healthy work-life balance. Changing Lanes helps youth obtain drivers’ permits and licenses, and prepares them for driving with confidence.

Lack of reliable transportation is a major obstacle that limits employment opportunities, and is detrimental to establishing a healthy work-life balance. Changing Lanes helps youth obtain drivers’ permits and licenses, and prepares them for driving with confidence.

Requirements:
Youth must be going to school and/or working. Be between the ages of 18 and 26. Have stable housing. Have a valid Identification Card ( Just in Time can provide a voucher to purchase an Identification Card for a reduced cost of $8)

College Bound (Just In Time)

JIT actively recruits high school seniors in the foster care system or former foster youth who are continuing their education through our partnerships with numerous community agencies. If you are in need of a laptop, printer, school supplies, or someone to provide an encouraging voice for your college career, apply for our Annual College Bound award and join the fun!

JIT actively recruits high school seniors in the foster care system or former foster youth who are continuing their education through our partnerships with numerous community agencies. If you are in need of a laptop, printer, school supplies, or someone to provide an encouraging voice for your college career, apply for our Annual College Bound award and join the fun! If you are a high school senior graduating in 2015 and will be attending a community college or four year university you can APPLY!

To qualify, you must be:
1) A former foster youth/AB12 youth between 18–26 years old
2) Enrolled at least part time 6 units at a four-year/two-year college for Summer/Fall
3) Have a Cumulative GPA of 2.0+ for high school graduate or continuing student

Financial Fitness develops financial literacy with individualized advisers, smart purchasing training, and match savings incentives. If you have trouble sticking to a budget, creating a savings plan, and keeping savings for long term planning or emergencies, this is the program for you! Financial Fitness offers participants opportunities to learn basic and advanced money management and an ability to match up to $4,500! With real-world financial gurus, online tools, and comprehensive classes offered 12 times per year, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and discipline to make smart money purchases.

Requirements:
Youth must be going to school and/or working and between the ages of 18 and 26. Must have an income and the ability to save.

My First Home transforms once empty apartments into warm homes with gently-used and new furnishings from our caring community.

Additional Information:
Requirements: Youth must be going to school, working, or combination of the two,be between the ages of 18 and 26, and have a signed lease or SILP. Join My First Home program and experience connections to community members who find it fun to transform an apartment into a comfortable and homey space! My First Home Guide Volunteers will assist you with small and large furnishings as well as provide guidance on smart purchasing and expenses related to the home.

Looking for a job? Struggling to make ends meet at your current job? Come join the My First Job program, build your resume and gain skills to secure a job making a living wage. Assists participants in securing jobs that offer a reasonable standard of living ($13-$15/hour). Provides access to reliable agencies and employers for finding work. Assists with preparation of cover letters, resumes, CV, etc. Focuses on building confidence of participants and obtaining necessary skills for interviewing and finding rewarding careers.
Requirements:
Youth must be going to school, working, or combination of the two , and between the ages of 18 and 26.
